SMI developed part for a new wind power project

Yesterday on Dutch television students of the TU in Delft told about their innovative project in wind power, with a kite. As sponsor SMI worked on a part of this system.

The students work with a kite of 25m2, a strong cable and a winch. This is what they need to turn on wind in to energy. The wind has influence on the movement of the winch, which produces energy because of the motion.

Two new Haas machines

Today have arrived two new machines for our department of turning and milling, the Haas ST-30SSY and ST-40.

The ability to turn and mill complex parts and perform multiple operations on one machine increases throughput, reduces handling, and improves accuracy. The Haas ST-30SS Series Y-axis turning centres provide 101 mm of Y-axis travel (±50,8 mm from the centerline) for off-centre milling, drilling, and tapping, and come standard with high-torque live tooling and a servo-driven C-Axis for versatile 4-axis capability. The ST-30SSY has a maximum capacity of 406 x 584 mm, and features a 22,4 kW spindle that turns to 4 800 rpm and yields 338 Nm of torque. A 24-station hybrid BOT/VDI turret is standard, and Z-axis rapids are 30,4 m/min.

The Haas ST-40 Series high-performance turning centres provide heavy cutting ability, extreme rigidity, and high thermal stability. These large-capacity machines offer the best combination of performance and value in their class, and are available with a wide selection of high-productivity options, including high-torque live tooling and C axis.

Visit us at the NIDV exhibition

The SMI Groep will be represented at the NIDV exhibition
on 20 November in Ahoy Rotterdam. Visit us at stand 4.115.
We would like to see you there.

SMI Dokkum provides frame for probing

Last week SMI Dokkum delivered a frame for the use of
probing of the seabed. On this frame there will be fastened
measuring equipment, which captures the structure of the
seabed. This inquiry involves a new wind farm.

SMI Plaatwerk on the move

SMI Plaatwerk recently invested in two new sheet metal machines. In the end of June, the current laser- and the punch machine will be substitute by the new ones from Trumpf.

These machines have new technologies which work more fast, precisely and more flexible. That’s why SMI Plaatwerk can shorten the production- and turnaround periods. Herewith fits the trend of low volume, high mix and high complexity.

There are many possibilities for dimensions en thicknesses now. SMI Plaatwerk can work with sheet metal from 3.000x1.500mm till a thickness of 15mm in steel, 8mm in stainless steel and 3mm in aluminium.

Expansion welding qualifications

Last month, we received the certificate obtained DIN 2303. It is a prolongation, we already weld steel and stainless steel, the expansion is about welding the materials aluminum and duplex.

We are progressive, and also for the welding qualifications, so we all weld in accordance with ISO 3834-2 2005 standard. It achieved Germanischer Lloyd certificate DIN 2303 for the manufacture and repair of military products, for instance welding. Moreover, the new certificate is valid for both of our sites, SMI Plaatwerk and SMI Dokkum. The certificate can be found here.
